Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)

What is a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)?

Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns while at rest to maintain essential functions, like breathing, circulation, and cellular activity. This is your baseline energy requirement. Knowing this helps take the guesswork out of nutrition planning and weight management.

What will you learn?

Your RMR test gives you insights into your metabolism with a detailed report that includes:

  • RMR (Kcal/day):  How many calories your body burns at rest

  • RQ (Respiratory Quotient): Tells you what fuel your body is using - fats, carbohydrates or a mix

  • Substrates Utilizations: Breakdowns of energy coming from fats vs. carbohydrates

This data is highly valuable for working with a nutritionist or dietitian to create a personalized plan tailored to you.

What to Expect During the Test

  • The test lasts 30 minutes under a  canopy while you are lying down and relaxing

  • You must fast for at least 8 hours before the test (water is okay)

  • Plan for 40-45 minutes total, which includes testing and a brief results review with our technician

  • You'll wear a canopy over your head that captures your oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide output, allowing us to analyze what your body is burning at rest
