GCC Student Teaching Internship Program (STIP)

Program Overview

Glendale Community College is looking for STEM students who may be interested in working with GCC faculty as a STEM Intern. GCC STEM Internship student(s) will provide mentorship and guidance to students in the classroom. The internship will provide each intern with a faculty mentor and the intern(s) will gain a better understanding of the academic system, teaching in higher education, and develop STEM engagement opportunities.

Internship Details:

  • Currently enrolled university students- Graduate students and/or Junior standing and above
  • Majoring in a STEM or EDU field
  • Must be able to commit to one complete semester
  • Have to be in good academic standing; min 2.5 GPA

Qualifying/Suggested majors:

Applied Mathematics, Biology, Bio Tech/Enterprise, Computational Forensics, Environmental Sciences, Forensic Sciences, Health Sciences, Medical Studies, Pharmacology/Tox, Secondary Ed (BIO), Secondary Ed (CHEM), Secondary Ed (Earth and Space Sciences), Secondary ED (Math), Secondary Physics, Biological Data Science, Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences

Internship Tasks/Expectations

  • Must attend course (per assigned schedule)
  • Utilize a time log for each day of internship work, have faculty mentor sign-off weekly
  • Create learning objectives with faculty mentor within first week
  • Complete end of internship evaluation as intern
  • Fill out a daily work journal to capture lessons learned/things to research/ideas

  • Help create a lesson (or portion)
  • Grade an assignment with rubric
  • Work with students to promote effective learning
  • Present an activity or class lesson/activity

  • Complete a reflective activity to summarize your learning experience (Fall semester). Present on internship experience at Department Chair meeting
  • Work collaboratively with other interns to develop activities and a dynamic schedule for a STEM day camp for junior high/high school level students (Spring semester)
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to underrepresented ethnic minority students in the classroom
