Bio

Biography

Dr. Cleworth received his PhD in comparative religion from Arizona State University in 2012 and has taught at GCC as residential faculty since 2006. His research focuses on the intersections of violence, memory and culture in the literary and visual arts. He is the recipient of several teaching awards, including the 2011 NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2012 GCC Honors Program Faculty of the Year.

During his tenure at GCC, he has served as a co-coordinator of the Honors Program, interim faculty director of CART, and co-advisor for Phi Theta Kappa. An advocate for humanities education, Dr. Cleworth promotes the study of visual, literary, and musical culture as tools for negotiating existentially charged events. His teaching philosophy focuses on building collaborative, authentic, and inclusive learning experience for his students in an intellectually invigorating environment.
