Second-Hand Lions

Second-Hand Lions, which opened Sept. 19, is a tale of friendship, love and belonging. It stars Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Haley Joel- Osment and Kyra Sedgwick.

Walter (Joel-Osment) is left with his "rich" old uncles for the summer, while his mother, Mae (Sedgwick) wanders the country.

Walter brings understanding and excitement to his uncles, Hub (Duvall) and Garth (Caine). During the daily activities that include frightening away door to door salesman with large shot guns, Walter teaches the men to open their lives and experience new things. And in turn, Walter learns to believe in what seems to be the unbelievable.

Hub and Garth led an active life, including an excitingly cheesy rescue mission in North Africa resulting in large sums of money. When they grew old and useless, they returned home to Texas to live out the rest of their lives. Together they gardened and enjoyed a semi-peaceful life that includes trying to avoid money grubbing relatives.

Walter came to them in need of stability and love. From Walter, they received a reason to enjoy life.

The three of them entertained themselves by purchasing interesting items from the salesmen, including a run down lion, named Jasmine, which annoyed the money –hungry relatives,

The title serves as a metaphor for the characters, Second-Hand Lions. It is a second chance for the men to raise a family and a second chance on love for Walter.

With patience, love and optimism Walter, Hub and Garth become a family.

Second-hand Lions presents a lesson in which the masses can learn from. That good does conquers over evil, and sometimes one needs to believe in something, just to get through the day.

A movie that the family can enjoy is few and far between. This is one of them, a story to inspire you to live your dreams, to care and to believe.

Shellie Boyd, ASU West student, said "it was good…a real family movie."

Father and son, Jim and Steffen Miner agreed. "It was so funny," says Steffen. Jim said, "I love Robert Duvall…it was a great story, great chemistry."

Second-Hand Lions is written and directed by BAFTA award-winning writer Tim McCunlies (Iron Giant). The movie was produced by New Line Cinema, and David Kischner.
