An unconventional lesson in history

The worlds most tokin' holiday founded on 4/20 By Jenna Duffy

I was recently reminded that the International Pot Smoker's Day is coming up on April 20 and that got the gears going and the question arose, where did the term 4/20 come from and how did it makes it's way as an international holiday? There were many myths online. One that seems to be the most popular is that 4-2-0 was the California police code for smoking marijuana. This myth has since been proved untrue as 420 is not code for anything remotely related to reefer. Which led me to one of the myths I've heard as a teenager: marijuana is called 420 because it contains 420 active chemicals in it. Well, not true either; marijuana has about 315 active chemicals, falling short and disproving this dope-y myth. There has been one myth that has been adopted as the true meaning adopted by High Times Editor-In-Chief Steven Hager, who states, "The term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation." High Times ultimately popularized the term and because of all the celebrations landing on that day across the world 4/20 became the stoner holiday. Cheba Hut, located across Olive Avenue from Glendale Community College (GCC), will be hosting its annual 4/20 party, featuring a 4 inch sub, bag of chips and a drink served on a collectible Frisbee for $4.20, they also host raffles, product giveaways, and music all day long. Though the day is dedicated to the stoners of society, it's really just a day about relaxing and enjoying the big green earth on which we all live.
