Glendale offers beauty through rose display

A rose is a rose is a rose By Eric Carroll

Saturday, April 5, was a beautiful day in Glendale, AZ. The sun was out, the temperature was in the low 80s' and the wind was blowing about 5 mph. From 1 to 4 p.m. The Rose Society of Glendale held its 20th Annual Rose Show at the Sahuaro Ranch Park Historic Area. The event, which was free to the public, drew a multi-age crowd and even some well behaved canines. The fruit groves were off limits for maintenance concerns. There were scores of different types of roses, and they even varied in size. The majority was "normal" size; the others were minis. The minis looked to perfect to be real. The roses that were in competition were displayed and judged in the Fruit Packing Shed, which is on the grounds pass the groves. The winning breeders received trophies and ribbons, which they will hold onto until next year's competition. Classes were held for those that do not know the A to Z on rose plants. The classes drew a good size crowd of beginners and novices. Members of the Rose Society were on hand to answer questions. Also on the grounds near the main house are several rose bushes with names like Mister Lincoln, Queen Elizabeth G F, Autumn Sunblaze mini, Othello Shrub, and First Love H T, just to name a few. Sahuaro Ranch is located at 9802 N. 59th Ave. (just north of GCC and is open from 6 a.m. until the sunsets every day). With plenty of places to sit down and relax or take something to eat and take in nature the park is a great place to go between classes.
