Celebrating the spirit of Ireland in the desert

By Kharli Mandeville
Reporter, The VOICE

So lads and lassies, looking for somewhere to do a wee bit o' celebrating on St. Patty's day? Whether you're looking for a place to bask in the culture of Ireland, or just an excuse to grab a pint of Guinness or two (or three or four or more?), we've got you covered!

The Irish community ( and the love of Irish style celebrating) is actually a large one here in Phoenix, and the list of upcoming St. Patrick's Day events is nearly endless, so here's a few just to get you started:

Flogging Molly at Tempe Beach Park: These guys are absolutely dedicated to celebrating St. Patty's Day with their Arizona fans. Once again you can shamrock out to your favorite Irish tunes Wednesday, March 17th at Tempe Beach Park. Tickets available online at luckyman.com

St. Patrick's Day Parade and Faire: Though this event will take place Saturday, March 13th, it's a great one for the whole family. With bagpipers, Irish step dancers, marching bands, and an expected 50,000 spectators, this is something you won't want to miss. The parade begins 10 a.m. at 3rd st. and Virginia and proceeds all the way to Margaret T. Hance Deck Park. Faire will be held at the Irish Cultural Center at 10:30 a.m. For more info you can visit phxirish.org.

Glendale: Westgate's going green! Beginning at 3 p.m. you can get your fill of live music, green beer, and even enjoy the fountains lit up in green all afternoon and evening.

Scottsdale: Head on over to the St. Patrick's Day Ultimate Block Party from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., and enjoy free admission before 8 p.m. With green beer and drink specials such as 20 dollars for eight beers, you're sure to have a good time. 4209 N. Craftsman Court, Scottsdale.

Tempe: For those who'd like an early start on the festivities, stop at Tempe Marketplace from 6 a. m. to 11 a.m. for an Irish breakfast and stay for live music and drink specials throughout the day.

There are countless Irish bars and pubs in the Phoenix metro area, so no matter where you go you'll definitely find something to do. Just remember guys, there's no need to drink and drive. Have a sober D.D., call a cab, or take advantage of the light rail system. You can still have fun while being safe.
