In their quest for their first ever national title, the Glendale volleyball team came up just short.
When the Lady Gauchos came onto the court on Nov. 19 to face Des Moines Area College, they meant business.
The Gauchos got off to a slow start, losing the first set 25-23, then came back and won the second set 25- 19.
With the match tied at 1-1 the Gauchos won the third set 25-20, forcing Des Moines to have to beat Glendale twice.
In the fourth match Glendale lost another close set 25-23, forcing a fifth and final set to determine who would play later that night.
The match was hard fought, but Glendale came up short, losing 15-12.
After losing to Des Moines, GCC would play for placing in the tournament the rest of the way. The next morning they would face Monroe College from New York.
The ladies cruised through that match in three straight sets, which would set them up to face McHenry College from Illinois.
GCC fell in the first set, but forced a game five, and would later move on to play for a ninth or tenth place finish in the tournament against North Platte College out of Nebraska.
Once again GCC would get off to a slow start, but would force another fifth set, losing in the final set 15- 9.
This loss would mean Glendale would finish in tenth place and ending their season with an overall record of 20-15 and a Region I championship.
Congratulations to all of the ladies, freshmen Bree Homsey, Stephanie Owen, Makayla Higgins, Jessica Youngberg, Makaela Glidewell, Katelin Bowler, Nikki Roholt, Tanner David, Mackenzie Willneff, and Ashley McCracken, and sophomores Leah Bradley, Lee Brooks, and Marissa Yoder, and finally to, Head Coach Lisa Stuck and her assistants Melissa DeWitt and Nick Giatroudakis.
