By Raquel Guerrero
Managing Editor, The VOICE

The world community celebrates their hope for a better tomorrow as they participate in a fundraiser for the creation of a Montessori School in Nawantale.

The Nawantale village is home to approximately 3,000 individuals and is located in Central Uganda, East Africa. Kay Grosso who an English professor at GCC is also a Director of The Uganda Community School Project: Nawantale.

According to the organization, the Montessori philosophy teaches the whole child and includes every mother and father in the creation of a learning-centered, healthy environment where children thrive.

They also stated that at the schools participants will eat regular meals, have literacy guidance, and family participation in reducing mosquito mortality.

In addition, the organization declared that the schools will also give adults opportunities to train and get jobs from the village, and will help improve the community through giving the villagers the formal education they have never received.

Recently the village of Nawantale has been subject to El Niņo flooding, but the 30 acre land bought for the creation of the school "is high and dry" according to Grosso who also stated that they are ready to build.

The celebration of the money fundraised by each school, family, business and individual for the building of the school will take place on Feb. 19, 2010.

Registration for the event began in Oct. 19 and the next steps for participants are to learn more about the project, train for the celebration, and fundraise for the building of the schools. For this specific world event, monies fundraised for the project will be due on Jan. 15, 2010 and the project website nawantale. org will announce the total amount fundraised shortly afterwards.

Project coordinators encourage individuals and classes to participate in this world event. For more information regarding the fundraiser contact Grosso at nawantale@yahoo.com or at (623)845-3865.
