Homecoming 2009: Into the Wild
By Taric Watts-WilliamsReporter, The VOICE
Throughout the week of October 12, The Associated Student Government of Glendale Community College (ASG) has collaborated with several clubs to deliver school spirit in lieu of our Homecoming game.
As you may already know from your high schools, homecoming is a time to come back to your Alma Mater to have fun at the school you once called your own.
GCC's homecoming is sponsored on two fronts; from alumni and for current students.
The week's theme has been "Into the wild", and students have let their wild side roam the campus as much as college safety would allow.
On Monday was "Growl your heart out!". There was a station to have your animal of choice (Snake, giraffe, etc.) stenciled on with paint.
In addition, students displayed their skills with karaoke, which had students crossing genres, crooning Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" to screaming AFI's "Miss Murder". The karaoke was sponsored by Sigma Chi Eta, the two-year honors society for communication students.
When asked why it's so imperative to have such events, the club advisor Rosie Mays said "I feel it is important to maintain a sense of unity on a twoyear campus".
Tearing up the concrete on Tuesday were participants of "On the Wild Side" Dance off.
When Wednesday came around, the smell of whipped cream was in the air. It was time for the "Don't Feed the Teachers" pie throwing contest. For just a dollar, you could cream a participant of your choice. They're probably still cleaning out all that whipped cream from their hair.
By Thursday, the "Who has the fiercest style?" fashion show had arrived. And it was as glamorous as it sounds. There was a scintillating stage already set up, courtesy of COMPASS (Gay straight alliance club of GCC). Students strutted their stuff across the stage, with plenty of zebra and leopard print all around.
By Friday, things started getting really intense.
Despite the near record temperatures, students lined up for the "Unleash your inner animal" rock wall—and a slice of free pizza, courtesy of ASG.
All of this as the Glendale Gaucho Football team and Cheer were getting the hype going for Saturday's big game. Homecoming had finally concluded by Saturday. With lots of red shirts, red hair, and even a fireworks show, even an alumni from the late 60's couldn't help from feeling welcomed home.
