The Glendale Community College (GCC) women's soccer team began their 2009 campaign at home against Scottsdale Community College on Aug. 29.
Glendale held the lead for the majority of the game, only to allow the Artichokes to tie it up in the waning moments, eventually forcing overtime.
The Lady Gaucho's lost in overtime by a score of 2-1. The only goal for Glendale was made by freshman Bailey Howard, recruited from Centennial High School.
New head coach Omid Aziminejad says that he was very proud of the girls and how they held their defense throughout the game. He admitted that Scottsdale is a very difficult team as they recruited nine players from the same soccer club.
He was proud that the girls didn't give up the first goal until the eighty-fifth minute of the game.
With the Lady Gaucho's disastrous 2008 season, Coach Aziminejad emphasizes that this season he is going to change things and that it will be a season to remember. The coach hopes to change the attitude among the team and states that they are a great team to compete with.
"They never give up; I never have to coach effort to them," says Aziminejad.
He admits that they have good team chemistry and are very coachable and he can't wait to see how the season turns out.
The team earned their first win of the year against South Mountain Community College on Sept. 2, with a score of 6-2.
The Lady Gaucho's lost at Pima College on Sept. 7, by a score of 2-1.
