Glendale's defensive line prepares to defend against American Sports University under the lights on Aug. 29.

On the first snap of the game, Glendale Community College (GCC) recovered a fumble on American Sports University's (ASU) 8-yard line.

Four plays later, the Gaucho's scored their first touchdown of the season with sophomore tailback Brian Conley rushing into the end zone.

The Gaucho's scored touchdowns in seven of their eight first-half possessions. Freshman tailback, John Hughes, recruited from the defending 5A-II state champion Centennial High School football team, led the team in rushing with 92 total yards. Hughes scored two touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for 49 yards.

Freshman quarterback Kevin Yost, from Mountain Ridge High School, went 7 for 9 and threw for 85 yards, including two touchdowns. Defensively, GCC showed its strength by holding ASU to a mere 78 total yards the entire game.

The Gaucho's went on to dominate their opponent from San Bernardino, California, with a final score of 56-0.

Glendale head coach Mickey Bell was not surprised of the outcome.

The Eagles only had 20 players, and in football 11 players take to the fi eld at one time, so there was not much time to rest for ASU. Bell states, "Our strongest part of the game would probably have been the substitutions and special teams. It ran pretty smoothly."

On Sept. 5 GCC traveled to take on Phoenix College. Both teams showcased powerful defenses and also struggled offensively.

Phoenix handed Glendale their first loss of the season, 8-2.
