Added charges, added insult
By April MoodyReporter, The VOICE
Arizona State University (ASU) surcharges are only temporary? Is that a joke? It seems that ASU President Michael M. Crow needs a reality check on tuition hikes, or more realistically, he already knows that they won't ever go away, and so does everybody else. No need to cover it up for us Crow. We get it, college is too expensive.
$640 more a semester, added on top of increasing tuition, may seem small to those who have their diploma in hand and a job to show for it, but to those of us who struggle to get by, increasing anything by more than a dollar is a big deal. In a failing economy where money for college is a distant luxury, surcharges only add a little more stress on top of every other struggle Arizonans face financially. At least treat us all with some dignity; just because we can't afford your secondary education doesn't mean we're stupid.
Anyone can figure out that the word "temporary" when attached to another increase in tuition for ASU is a humorous insult intended to do nothing more than stifle our respect for a university that is already failing.
These "temporary" surcharges tend to just tempt students to look elsewhere for our degrees. If you're going to make student's funding school this difficult, at least be honest about it, and admit this one prevailing truth: your surcharges aren't temporary, they're permanent.
