Men enter regionals on the upswing

By Matt Petersen
Sports Editor, The VOICE

Some athletes would be against the idea of the regular season not meaning a thing come playoff time.

Don't count the men's tennis team of Glendale Community College among them.

The NJCAA Region I tennis playoffs begin this morning at Paseo on 63rd Avenue and Thunderbird. Glendale has no number one or two seeds, so their matchups are determined purely by luck of a draw; it's the kind of break they've been missing. After a rough start thanks to injuries and inconsistent chemistry, the Gauchos enter today's regional playoffs with the one thing that does matter: confidence.

Glendale lost a hotly contested match to San Diego City College last week, dropping the contest 5-4. Despite the loss, coach Chris tolson was encouraged.

"We probably played our best match of the season. It looks like they're headed on the right track."

It's just in time for the Gauchos. The team finally settled upon its top six singles and top three doubles lineup with everyone on board as of last week.

Julio Herrera, Glendale's number two player, expects contributions from everyone if they are to earn sufficient points to advance to nationals.

"I think it's everybody's responsibility to get points. They have to try and give their best. As long as they give their best, I'm good with that."
