Students meet administrators at lunch

Yes, there is such a thing as a free lunch, if the price to be paid is something other than money.
For students at Glendale Community College, there was a free meal late last month in the Student Union building, but with gentle strings attached – the opportunity to meet with school administrators, who helped dish up the tasty fare.
For scores of budget-conscious students who queued up in the long food line, the free lunch and the meet-and-greet proved impossible to resist.
Some said they relished the food, along with the chance to say hello to Dr. Velvie Green, the GCC president, as well as a number of campus deans who took turns in the chow line serving up chips, salsa, soft drinks and a variety of Mexican entrees.
"It was fun, and it went well," Green said after assisting with a large tray of mini-beef burritos. "The line ended when the food ended."
The meet-and-greet luncheon was held March 31 under the sponsorship of Associated Student Government, a leadership group at GCC that works with faculty and administrators in fostering student rights and privileges.
Isaac Torres, the group's president, said he was pleased with the opportunity that was offered to have students grab a bite and meet with school officials. He said Associated Student Government sponsors such events on a periodic basis. Doug Beguin, a business student at GCC, and Jeremy Pearson, an education student, also voiced their approval while enjoying their free meals.
"It was a good opportunity for the students to meet administrators," Beguin said. Pearson agreed, adding, "The food was excellent."
