Finding creative ways to help save the Earth

By Leah LeMoine
Reporter, The VOICE

The Student Environmental Club, in collaboration with the faculty's Green Efforts Committee, will hold a carnival-style pie toss on Earth Day to benefit the organizations and go towards planning future events and projects.

The pie toss idea, a throwback to high school carnivals and old-fashioned state fairs, was conceived by the clubs as a way to raise money and get students involved in a fun way. They will be selling pies for students to throw at professors and other members of the faculty. The price is $5 for three pies and $2 for one pie.

"I think it's going to be an absolute blast and that's definitely the part I'm looking forward to," said Courtney Clark, president of the Student Environmental Club. "I think this event gives the students a chance to even the score with their mentors in a fun way and I just want everyone to enjoy themselves."

Clark does not yet have a definitive list of which faculty members will be participating, but she promises that there will be plenty of opportunities for students to pie their professors in the face.

"I can say that there will be a good number of the science faculty participating," said Clark. "They were all a little hesitant as you can imagine, but they are getting into the spirit. It should be noted that each target will only be available for a certain time slot and those will be posted on the flyers as soon as they become available."

The fund-raiser will coincide with the group's second annual Dumpster Dive, which will also be held on April 22 in front of the library. The events are part of the groups' ongoing efforts to raise awareness about environmental issues like global warming, pollution and renewable energy and encourage student to take a more active role in protecting the environment.

"I'm predicting that we are going to have a great result with not only the Dumpster Dive, but with this (fund-raiser) as well," said Clark. "We have very high hopes for this one given how much fun it's promising to be."

Students who want to learn more about the fund-raiser or the Dumpster Dive should contact Clark or attend a Student Environmental Club meeting, which meets every Monday from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. in room A142.
