Mediocrity a common thread in 2008-09

By Matt Petersen
Sports Editor, The VOICE

April means playoffs for the spring sports teams at Glendale Community College, and those teams are aiming for something unachieved by their fall and winter predecessors: a regional championship.

Both men and women's soccer teams failed to qualify for the postseason.

Glendale football missed out on a chance to play in the Valley of the Sun Bowl after losing the standings tiebreaker to Phoenix College.

The Gauchos' volleyball team hosted the playoffs as the number one seed, but lost a heart-breaking 5-set match to Scottsdale. Drained, they suffered their second and elminating loss to Phoenix in the semifinals.

Men's basketball saw a second-half comeback fall short in the first round against Scottsdale. The women's team pulled a Cinderella to the championship game before falling to Pima. Gauchos' baseball (9-13 ACCAC) is on the outside looking in, but has enough time to make up some ground.

Glendale tennis teams may hold the school's best hope for postseason success. Both are currently second in the conference.
