Music has had such a profound influence on the world for millennia. Now in recent years it has been a gateway to better health. More research has shown that music can help to calm and relax one in great stress or pain. Music can even benefit the heart, according to popular medical website WebMD.com.
It has been noted by Luciano Bernardi, MD, who works at Italy's University of Pavia, that those who play an instrument are even more likely to have a healthy heart.
Music sets the mood to be calm and relaxed or fun and energetic. It has shown to improve athletic performance and even improve movement in nerve-damaged patients.
The study showed improvements in breathing, blood pressure and heart rates between the pauses of the music. A variety of music was played leading researchers to believe that the song made no difference only the tempo.
Music can provide an outlet to feelings that might otherwise stay inside. A person's mood can reflect what they listen to.
Music therapy has become a popular way to help improve or maintain ones health. Its focus is not only on ones physical but mental condition as well.
It has seen much use in rehabilitation for stroke patients. Music stimulates the mind and reduces anxiety further improving ones mood. It has a positive emotional affect and helped patients be more active in the rehabilitation process. In addition to traditional therapy it helps to speed up the recovery rate.
"Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses", according to the AMTA (American Music Therapy Association) website.
