Creative writing certificate program offered at GCC
By Mary AllanReporter, The VOICE
If you love writing and want to pursue a professional career in this field or if you prefer to write for personal growth, then Glendale Community College (GCC) has something for you. GCC and several other colleges in the Maricopa Community College District (MCCD) are offering an Academic Certificate in Creative Writing.
The 24-credit certificate program is a skill building program that provides a wide range of writing styles. The classes include everything from playwriting, to magazine writing to screenwriting.
The creative writing courses are designed to challenge and expose students to fellow writers, and provide feedback from experts in the field.
Laura Schuett, the creative writing instructor, says that the program is designed to attract individuals viewing the program/certificate as an opportunity to prepare for an under-graduate and graduate degree in English (with a Creative Writing Emphasis.)
The program is also ideal for students preparing for a MFA program and interested in developing a strong portfolio, nontraditional students with careers or traditional students with other degree goals drawn to diverse offering for their own personal development.
In order to get the certificate the student only needs to take six units at GCC and the rest can be taken at any other MCCD school that offers the required classes. Phoenix College is one of the first community colleges in the U.S. to have a stand-alone certificate program in creative writing.
GCC already has a thriving creative writing community. There is the Midnight Metaphors, which is the creative writing club at GCC. There is also a literary magazine, the Traveler, in which the students participate in the production of the magazine. The yearly magazine has won several awards.
