President elect Barack Obama makes world news headlines

By Mary Allan

Even a thunderstorm could not dampen the enthusiasm of the residents of Kogelo, Kenya, the people danced and cheered as the band played on. Barack Obama, a favorite son, had become the first black man to be to be elected as the President of the United States of America. Kogelo is where Obama's father was born.

For the most part the world agrees that the election is glad tidings. British Prime Minister. Gordon Brown said, "Barack Obama ran an inspirational campaign I know Barack Obama and we share many values," according to Gulf News.

According to the International Herald Tribune, "A new face offers Europe a new chance to remarry America," said Wolfgang Ischinger, a former German ambassador to the United States, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai hoped Mr. Obama's leadership would "bring peace to Afghanistan".

Not everyone is happy, however. According to Haaretz, Israelis Daily Newspaper: "On Iran, however, Israel is worried that Democratic candidate Barack Obama will take a significantly softer line than the outgoing administration has." Also, according to the New York Times, "President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia greeted his future American counterpart, Senator Barack Obama, with bristling language on Wednesday, promising to place short-range missiles on Russia's western border if Washington proceeded with its planned missile defense system in Eastern Europe."

Whether you are happy or not with the outcome of this election, most people could agree with the words of Britain's The Guardian, "Mr. Obama will take office in January amid massive unrealizable expectations and facing a daunting list of problems."
