Friday night, Oct. 24 Glendale Community College (GCC) students, alumni, and faculty members dressed up for the semi-formal homecoming dance in the student union.
The festivities broke out at 7 p.m. when students ate pizza, participated in voting for the homecoming court, sat for professional photographs to remember the night by, and initially coming together with fellow classmates for a night of fun.
The event was put together by the Associated Student Government (ASG). The Student Union was transformed into an incredible display of Gaucho pride.
By 9 p.m., the food was gone and the decorative tables where deserted, the dance floor was packed with students dancing into the wee hours of the night.
The DJ played a diverse set of songs, everything from dance rock, pop, R&B, Latin, rap, old school soul, and even electronic. The diversity of music was perfectly embracive to the GCC community.
Even if the students had no idea what song they were dancing to, they never missed a beat. From high heels to bare feet, girls were burning up the dance floor, the guys kept up with break dancing, line dancing, and rocking out.
At 10 p.m. the homecoming court winners were announced. The homecoming attendants were David McGee and Natalie Yessin. Homecoming prince was Jerry Lavender and the Homecoming princess was Cherish Michael. The 2008 homecoming king was Alex Fontes and the homecoming queen was Maria Gallo.
From the singing group Julio and Joel, GCC student Joel Joa preformed live with Julio Torres to rev up the dance with their unique style of music. The crowd embraced Julio and Joel with their hands raised, singing along, and rocking out with the boys while they captivated the room.
At 11 p.m. the dance was coming to a conclusion. The energy in the room was still high, the crowd was still exhilarated, and the students weren't ready to call it a night.
As the crowd flocked to the parking lot they began getting excited and pumped up for the homecoming football game against Pima Aztecs the following night. "Tomorrow, we should paint our faces for the game!" Anna Knicles exclaimed to her friends Jennifer Sanders, whom replied, "that would be really awesome!"
Prior to the homecoming dance, ASG put together a pep rally so that GCC could spend the whole day celebrating their Gaucho spirit.
Students attended the pep rally in their school colors, red and black, to show their pride in GCC. The pep rally took place in the Outdoor Mall where students and alumni gathered to meet and cheer on the Gaucho football team and coaches.
