Gaucho Roundup: Volleyball bows out early in playoffs, football dominates at homecoming

A 17-1 record. 2008 regular season conference champions. None of it bears any weight after the Gauchos' volleyball team wilted in the Region I Division II playoffs. Glendale was ousted in the double-elimination tournament last Friday after dropping consecutive matches to Scottsdale (2-3) and Phoenix (0-3), respectively.

Scottsdale went on to win the regional championship against Phoenix Saturday in three sets.

Defensive mental errors proved to be the Gauchos' undoing. Time and again Scottsdale was able to bounce back when Glendale appeared to be in position to win.

"It was an all-out war," said coach Lisa Stuck. "It usually comes down to consistency at the end of games. Just a few critical mistakes in that critical game five [against Scottsdale]. There's not that much margin for error when you get in a match like that. We just weren't able to pull it out."

Glendale was well-represented in the regular season honors. Stuck was voted ACCAC Coach of the Year.

Sophomores Brittany Clark and Amber Yazzie were both named All-ACCAC First Team and All NJCAA Region I Division II First Team. Freshman Leah Bradley was named All-ACCAC Honorable Mention.

Home cooking tasted good for Glendale football, as the Gauchos trampled the Pima Aztecs 63-0.

Running back Brad Jackson lead the offensive onslaught, amassing yards on 18 carries. As a team the Gauchos rushed for 280 yards.

Quarterback Tyler Hosler directed an efficient passing game for Glendale, converting 8-of-12 passes, including four touchdowns.

The team followed up their homecoming victory with a 16-8 victory over Mesa last Saturday. They currently sit third in the conference, a game behind Phoenix.
