Students encouraged to get out and vote

By Amanda Savage
Freelance Reporter, The VOICE

There has been a lack of interest by the people of America and its' current politics, and though it is necessary for them to understand their role and notice the importance of voting and politics. It would be harmful to our country to have ignorant people with biased opinions at the voting polls making vital decisions for all of us.

Yes, politics may be a touchy subject with a lot of people, and not a seemingly interesting topic to bring up when you are at the bar or at a kegger on Friday night. But politics matter and directly affect you.

Politics affect the price of gas, the cost of your tuition, who you can marry, how much your rent will be, and virtually everything.

So many people have disconnected themselves from what is going on in the world and have fully immersed themselves into the petty drama of their individual lives.

With the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, global out sourcing and dependency on foreign oil, we as a people can no longer stay focused on just our country.

What happens in the White House is just as important as what happens in China and Russia.

The American people have come to the conclusion that who you vote for does not matter, and their voice will not be heard.

When I will confidently make the assumption that salaries, the price of necessities and personal freedoms are things everyone finds at least some what important. If you feel your voice will not be heard, whose fault is that?

The American people have allowed, in some cases, the corruption in politics to get to the point it is at. If we were, and would have been aware, this probably would not be an issue.

To say who the next president will be, or who the governor is, or what happens in Wall Street does not matter is an ignorant statement, because all of these decisions are important and directly effect most of the components of your life. What is almost comical about this is that heaven forbid a law is passed that we dislike, the economy goes sour or anything happen in Washington we do not agree with.

It is at this time the uncaring American, recognizes their right to participate in political activity and will blindly yell, shout, and picket about something they hardly know anything about.

The issues and decisions we dislike in the government are the only things we talk about.

These are the things parents present their children with at the dinner table and the things we complain to our friends about.

Instead of having been aware before the decision was made, or the law was passed, talking about it with people, voting, and having it prevented. Instead, we remain ignorant to everything going on around us, then do not understand and get upset about it later.

The issues remain, because Americans do not take action, and by remaining unprogressive the decisions made will continue to be ones we disagree with.

Politics is not rocket science, it is a composition of social issues and economics, with a lot of history and can be understood by method of cause and effect.

Now, more than ever, our voice needs to be heard. We are in a time of war, are facing economic and social crisis, and are completely divided as a nation on what to do.

Americans can not play dumb any longer, we need to get out, get heard and get educated on what is going on. There is a lot of change on the verge of spilling onto all of us, regardless of who is elected, and we need to make sure it is the change that is in best interest for all of us.
