Football wins home opener in defensive struggle, 11-7

It wasn't pretty, but it worked.358 total yards re¬sulted in a paltry 11 points.

That was enough, how¬ever, to overcome Mesa's dismal 79 yards of total offense, which garnered a solitary touchdown on the evening, and the Gauchos won their home opener 11-7 on Sept. 13th.

Wide receiver Daniel Trevort was the offensive catalyst for the Gauchos, gaining 129 yards on ten passes.

Trevort scored the only touchdown of the evening for Glendale.

Coach Mickey Bell was pleased with the team's drives on offense, but ac¬knowledged conversion was factor.

"I was really happy with how our offense moved the ball," Bell said, "especially how they converted on some third downs."

"I wasn't happy with how we weren't converting when we were in the red zone. We need to do a better job of that."

Without much produc¬tion on offense, the Gau¬chos' defense carried the team for much of the eve¬ing. Their only lapse came on the opening kickoff of the second half, when Mesa was able to return the ball for a touchdown.

"Defensively, we played very physical," Bell said. "However, we almost gave up a couple big plays."

Glendale followed up a week later with a dominat¬ing 40-13 win over Scotts¬dale.

The Gauchos will face their toughest test of the season this Saturday at home against Snow Col¬lege.

Snow is the only other team besides Glendale with an overall unbeaten record.
