GCC joins in on the MySpace, Facebook craze

By Justin Shepard

It's not MySpace and it's not Facebook. However, something pretty similar has been developed for new students at Glendale Community College (GCC). It's called GCC Unplugged.

The site, www.gcc-students.org, has come to life lately. This social utility includes a variety of GCC students whose majors range from business to psychology and everything in between. Men and women of all ages and backgrounds unite by creating personalized profiles on the site. In these profiles students can display photos, talk about themselves, send private messages, and post notes on other members' boards.

One of the popular features of the site is the ability to send friend requests to others. These friends can be someone to seek for a few homework tips, or someone to talk with when finishing up a paper late at night. No matter the time of day, it is almost certain that a handful of students will be logged on. Creating friendly networks with others is one of the strategies for college success, and GCC Unplugged allows students to do so. Miranda Chavez, a business major at GCC, comically states, "It's very important to create friendships because you can meet new shopping buddies!"

A discussion forum is also available, which allows registered users to discuss a variety of subjects as well as set up meeting times to personally greet a few of the other users. Since joining the site, several students have met with fellow Glendale Gauchos in the Student Union.

When asked of her GCC Unplugged experience, Chrissy Frisbee, a Graphic Design major, replied, "When I began using the GCC Unplugged website, my intentions were to build a foundation of new friends. Only after a few weeks did I find myself connecting with people I barely knew through the website; people whom I thought would be one way turned out to be another. As time went by I collected peoples schedules and planned get togethers and meeting at the school. The first time I met up with everyone it was amazing."

The service also provides articles regarding college life, strategies for success, and much more information.

If you're looking for ways to meet other students, GCC Unplugged is the place. Simply register, create a profile, and soon you will be only a mouse click away from establishing long lasting friendships.
