Tuition Hike
Brian RobinsonReporter, The Voice
With open enrollment under way and the summer vacation from the stress of school coming up, the last thing somebody wants to think about is paying for the classes they have signed up for in the summer and fall. Well, think again because Glendale Community College (GCC) and every other Maricopa Community College raised the tuition for each class by $6 per credit hour. The tuition hike is effective July 1, 2008, for all classes starting in the fall and mainly affects in-county students and out-of-state students. The new price that a Maricopa County resident has to pay for one credit is now $71. This price has been raised $6 from the previous credit hour price of $65. The price that a resident outside of Maricopa County stayed the same at $268 per credit hour. The price per credit that an out-of-state student will have to pay is $96 for less than seven credits and $286 for seven or more credits. Could this tuition increase for Maricopa County resident students and out-of-state students decrease enrollment for GCC and other Maricopa Community Colleges countywide? For a standard three credit class, you can expect to pay $213, which is an $18 increase from the previous price. Will this increase cause students to take fewer credit hours per semester? If this is true it will increase the time students spend at GCC, which will increase the overall total enrollment. The new tuition prices are subject to change, and should be verified when you go to sign up for your future classes.
