Times up: Are ready to graduate?
Shantell WhiteheadReporter, The Voice
With the spring semester coming to a conclusion and graduation just days away, many Glendale Community College (GCC) students become nostalgic and begin reminiscing about their years here. Despite the stress of finals and preparations for the commencement ceremony, several students took the time to look back and reflect on their time at GCC. Connie Tellez, a journalism major, enjoyed her two years here at GCC but is "really happy to be done." Her favorite teachers were Dr. Burk, a communications teacher, and Dr. Oliver, a psychology teacher, because they were "really good, helpful teachers who truly care about you passing." Tellez plans on attending the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism in downtown Phoenix.
Another graduating student, Lizz Guice, considers GCC a "kick-a** school" with "excellent teachers and campus. As a psychology major, she especially enjoyed classes geared toward her area of expertise, but she also cites biology as a favorite. Guice plans on furthering her education at Arizona State University West Campus.
Also a psychology major, almost-graduate Lesley Cruz warmly remembers attending Dr. Shew's math class, where she enjoyed the ever-caffeinated instructor's good sense of humor. Cruz's favorite instructors also included Dr. Oliver and Dr. Romero from the psychology department.
She "really liked attending GCC" and hopes future students will also enjoy their time here, which is ensured, she says, "if they take some classes with the professors I named earlier!"
Despite only spending a short period of time at GCC, students form lifelong relationships and acquire lasting knowledge and experience. Fond memories guide our students into the next stage of their lives as they participate in GCC's Forty-Third Annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 9, 2008.
According to GCC's website, gccaz.edu, the ceremony takes place at 7:00 p.m. in the Central Mall. Graduates must report to the Math (MA) building no later than 6:30 p.m. to assemble for the Line of March. The Central Mall is located directly southwest of the Library Media Center (LMC). For those who would like photos taken, professional photographer will be available to take pictures of graduates and certificate recipients as they receive their award and for individual portraits prior to the ceremony. Individual portraits will take place in the Math (MA) building from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Also, a VHS or DVD of the Commencement Ceremony will be available after June 6. You may order a copy by paying a $10 fee at the Media Center located in the Library Media Center. Orders will not be accepted at the commencement rehearsal or at the ceremony.
