Young Life gives shot of life to Peruvian citizens

By Eric Carrell

While some of us were either working extra hours, partying or just relaxing during spring break, a few members of Young Life packed up their personal belongings and headed south. Not to Mexico to partake in the wild activities down there. No, these young men and women went on a mission to aid fellow Young Life members and a community in Peru. Yes, Peru. And you thought you went south.

Kendra Morisky, one of the members who went on this goodwill trip, talked with The Voice about it. Morisky told The Voice that while in Peru they help to repair a house by building a wall.

While repairing the house Morisky was approached by some of the local girls who were curious about who the Young Life group was and what they were about. Rachel Patton made balloon animals for the younger children. After the house wall was built, it was time to go and lend a hand to a school for the disabled.

Morisky said, "While at the school we repainted some rooms and built four wheelchair ramps from the ground up." Since there where no ramps in place they had to break the concrete up and dispose of it before they could build. And since there were no contractors to do the job Young Life dug into it - literally.

The trip was not all work and no pain the members did get to spend the last day of their good will trip at the beach.

To help fund the trip the group held fundraisers such as bake sales, yard sales, car washes, and they help hand out phone books with the Lions Club. They also received contributions from other sources to pay for the trip. This trip is taken twice a year once in the spring and once in the summer and they also go to Mexico to aid the Young Life members there.
