Why Do I Need a Test?

The Maricopa Community Colleges are committed to fostering a supportive atmosphere that provides students with the optimum opportunity for successful academic experiences. Studies show that student academic achievement is directly related to the proper initial course placement; consequently, we require all new students to complete three placement tests to help ensure that they start with the right courses for their particular needs.

These course placement tests will determine whether you need to start with any preparatory coursework in English, Mathematics, and Reading and how many courses in each subject you will need to complete for your program of study.

You will only have two chances to take each test.  Students who do some review prior to taking their test tend to score better and therefore have to take fewer classes.  Some study tools are available to assist you to be as prepared as possible.

Initial course placement should be discussed with a member of Student Success Team, an academic advisor or counselor who is skilled in assessing the student's needs and factors that affect student success.

Testing for Course Placement

Students will be required to complete a course placement test under any one of the following conditions:

  • The student is taking his or her first college credit English, Reading and/or Math course, or any college course for which English, Reading or Math is a prerequisite;
  • The student is pursuing a degree and does not have current valid district approved course placement scores on file or does not have previous college credit in English, Reading, and Math;
  • Advisors may determine additional conditions under which students would be required to complete course placement testing. Contact an advisor for additional conditions.

Students MAY be exempt from a course placement test if at least one of the following conditions apply:

  • The student has earned an associate's or higher degree;
  • The student has earned college credits from a regionally accredited college in English, reading, and Math with a grade of C or higher. Some courses require the prerequisite be completed within the past two to five years. Meeting with an Academic Advisor is recommended to determine degree/program specific requirements;
  • The student has current valid district approves course placement scores on file.

Note: Being exempt from taking a course placement test does not exempt the student from fulfilling the minimum graduation requirements.

Retest Policy

Students will be permitted one retest in each of the exams (English, Reading, or Math) after at least a 24-hour waiting period. A second retest is permitted no sooner than three months from the first attempt. After the initial three attempts, students must wait two years before taking the exam for the fourth time.

Course placement scores will be valid for two years.
