Hoop of Learning, High School to College Bridge Program Focus on Native-American Students
Program Description:The Glendale Community College "Hoop of Learning" Program is a high school to college Bridge Program designed to increase awareness and interest in higher education among Native-American students.
The Hoop of Learning is a collaborative partnership with the Maricopa Community Colleges and local high school districts. The Hoop of Learning initiative is open to Native-American students in the Glendale Union High School District, Peoria Unified School District, Phoenix Union High School District, and other school districts who have Native-American student populations.
Glendale Community College offers comprehensive transfer and career and technical programs as well as college preparatory courses for students needing to strengthen their skills in English, reading and math.
The intent of the Hoop of Learning is to improve the educational success of Native-American students and cultivate interest in higher education.
Program Outcomes:The focused nature of the Hoop of Learning Program shows:
- Higher high school graduation rates among Native-American students
- Structured environment stresses getting a college education and learning post-secondary options
Higher than average success rate among students who participate in the "special admissions" and "summer bridge" programs
Recruitment and Registration:GCC works with local high school districts to identify Native-American students and advise them of the benefits of participating in the GCC "Hoop of Learning" summer bridge program.
The Hoop of Learning Program invites participation of high school districts, charter schools and tribal affiliates within and outside Maricopa County.
Parent and Student Consultation Services:On every occasion, parents are involved in the discussion of their student's educational program and progress. Parent involvement in setting the educational strategy for their student and participation in the selection of classes is key to student success. Parents are advised of the various degree programs options and strategies to achieve the requirements for those programs.
Note: Students under age 18 who have not graduated from high school and do not have a GED need to go through the Special Admissions process to enroll. Call 623.845.3313 for information.
