Responsibilities of GCC Student Organization Advisors

Act in a consulting and advising capacity only. Final decisions should be made by majority vote of
club members. Advisors serve as impartial observer and/or mediators when necessary.

Assist the group in achieving sound financial procedures. All money should be received or disbursed in
accordance with the college policies.

Attend all meetings. No official club business may be transacted without the advisor present. If you
cannot be present for a meeting of your organization, you may designate a faculty substitute. In such
cases, notify the Student Leadership Center.

Attend all scheduled functions planned by the group. No events or travel may occur without an advisor
present.

Be familiar with your organization's constitution, finances, and activities.

Do your part by encouraging and supporting members. Recognize achievements.

Encourage members to operate within the framework approved by the Associated Student Government.
Events and activities should be approved through regular channels. Familiarize yourself with campus
policies and procedures.

Keep in contact and consult with the officers or committee chairs of the club when necessary,
especially when changes in policy, purpose, or major programs are being considered.

Represent the administration and refer students to, or consult with, the Coordinator of Student Life & Leadership or the
Dean of Student Life.

Understand the organization, be aware of the goals and functions of the group(s) you are advising and
assist in developing goals that fulfill the group's purpose.

Work with student officers prior to meetings setting up and reviewing meeting agendas. Assist them in
appropriate group procedures of leadership and upholding the standards and regulations of the college.
Offer constructive criticism and guidance, reminding and enforcing college rules when needed.
