Meeting of March 22, 2007
Approved Minutes

I. General
A. Call to Order: A quorum being present, President Jim Daugherty called the meeting to order at 2:35 P.M. in the A-146 Conference Room, Senators present included Secretary Laura Avila, Treasurer David Jenkins, and Senators Doug Brenner, Ruth Callahan, Susan Campbell, Fernando Garcia, Steve Kadel, John Kelly, Johnnie C. May, Carlos V. Nuñez, Alicia Ottenberg, Robert Reavis, and Jim Reed.
B. Introduction of Guests- Including, but not limited to, Associated Student Government President George Repta and Lyle Walcott.
C. The proposed meeting agenda was adopted as amended.
D. ASG President George Repta informed Senate that Spring Bash was a big success. He also extended an invitation to the grand opening of the Student Union on March 28th from 1:00-4:00pm.
E. Reyes Medrano, President Elect of the FEC, informed Senate of the current situation regarding the Meet and Confer team. Mr. Medrano expressed his frustration regarding the process that the Meet and Confer team must follow. He stated it was time to try and take the opportunity to restructure the way things are done in order to directly negotiate with the Governing Board. He also informed Senate that the East Valley Tribune was requesting all syllabi of courses taught by coaches. Mr. Medrano also stated that the Blue Ribbon Panel recommendations that were approved at the last Governing Board meeting may be in direct conflict with the RFP. They are now in the process of evaluating and creating a report of those direct conflicts.
F. The minutes from the February 22nd meeting, distributed via email, were unanimously approved.
G. Treasurer’s Report-
Treasurer Jenkins reported a balance of $9933.50 for all accounts. There were no reported expenditures for the month.
H. President’s Report-
President Daugherty informed Senate that he attended meetings with Faculty who have personal issues. He also attended the past several Governing Board meetings.
I. FEC Report-
President Daugherty informed Senate that the FEP language requiring student evaluations was deleted.
FEC is also debating on whether or not to move their office out of district. There are no concrete proposals.
There was a discussion regarding sabbaticals and the use of travel and professional growth funds. Currently Faculty have used funds while on sabbatical, however the RFP states Faculty should not have access to these funds. Faculty on sabbatical will no longer be able to apply for travel and faculty professional growth funds.
J. Governing Board Report-
The recommendations made by the Blue Ribbon Panel, which was formed by Chancellor Glasper, have been approved by the Governing Board. Faculty will be receiving information on these new policies via email and informational handouts.
II. Old Business
A. President Daugherty informed Senate that he spoke to Dr. Green and informed her that the position being proposed for the new Director of Recruitment was not acceptable. Vice President Alberto Sanchez would have more information regarding this issue by the end of the week.
B. President Daugherty informed Senate that Dr. Green has hired a new consultant to redesign the web. She expressed the same urgency at getting the web redesigned, but that the April 2nd deadline recommended by Senate would not be met.
C. President Daugherty informed Senate that the First Year Teaching experience, the Forensics Team, and Steve Kadel’s Geology group would be the topics presented at the March 27th Governing Board college presentation.
D. President Daugherty stated Dean Chuck Jeffrey is in charge of signage for the campus. New signage will be in for the Fall semester.
E. Remuneration was tabled for the next meeting.
III. New Business
A. Senator Reavis informed Senate that there are 11 nominations for 5 Senate seats along with Laura Avila’s seat (1 year only).
B. The Senate passed a resolution in regards to the April 13th Open House. Senate asked President Daugherty to email the resolution to Faculty via email:
GCC Senate urges Faculty to recognize the importance of public
relations (P.R.) and encourages all Faculty to support and attend and don their
GCC apparel at the GCC April 13th Open House and help in any way
possible.
