Faculty Senate

May 11th, 2001

Call to Order:            The Senate hosted an all faculty luncheon prior to the regular meeting which was called to order by President Jim Reed at 12:55 PM.  Both the luncheon and meeting were well attended.    President Reed invited several members of the faculty and senate to summarize progress on the following projects:

·        Senator Jim Daugherty reported that the document known as the College Plan is nearing completion.  That document is required by the RFP and will include a procedure for evaluating administration performance.  That procedure will be similar to procedure currently provided for student evaluation of faculty.  Administration will have a hand in the design of the instrument or process and the resulting feedback is intended for Administration’s use only and will not be intended for distribution or other publication beyond that.

·        Senator-at-Large Linda Smith provided an update on the planned Campus Climate Survey.  The ASU Survey Research Lab has been selected to conduct the survey.  Several drafts have been reviewed and a final document will be ready for distribution in the fall.  The survey instrument will be designed in such a way that no individual respondent can be identified. Respondents will send completed surveys direct to the ASU Lab.

·        Senator Dave Raffaelle summarized the findings of the recent College Wide Academic Achievement Cohort (CWAC) test.  The outcomes showed that GCC students on average scored higher in college level reading, college level writing, critical thinking and using mathematical data compared to the national profile of college and university sophomores.

·        Senator Bob Hubbard reported on the work of the Ethics Committee.  The Committee has completed its work and has developed a document that describes a process through which an employee may solicit mediation on a voluntary basis.  The process is required by NCA and is intended to provide a method for solving problems in a confidential setting.

·        Vice President Carmela Arnoldt expressed appreciation for the submittals to the Peerpoint newsletter.

·        Ruth Callahan, Faculty Advisor to Phi Theta Kappa thanked all those who attended the recent dedication of the academic trophy case in the Library.  Ruth reported on a variety of activities the group has been involved in this past year and encouraged interested faculty to volunteer to be the next advisor.  That position is now eligible to receive some release time.

·        Mary Leskovsky, Coordinator of the Honors Program thanked everyone for their support and noted that there is an interest in having more 200 level honors courses made available.

·        President Jim Reed reported on a variety of local and District issues that he is watching carefully including: discussions about who owns intellectual property, District Mentoring Project, District Faculty Association Legal Services program, indemnity exposure, a proposed “portable burn trailer” on or near the campus, a proposed charter high school at GCC and the idea of granting those with 20 or more years of “exceptional” service emeritus status.  Jim also thanked the Senate for its support this year, introduced newly elected senators and spoke about his plan to resume the presentation of plaques to retiring faculty.

·        Senator Jim Daugherty provided a summary of the highlights of the Meet & Confer process.

Adjournment:            No matters were voted on and the meeting adjourned at 2:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

John E. “Jack” Rose, Secretary
