COLLEGE ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND RECOGNITIONS

Welcome to New Employees
Please welcome the following new employees to GCC, approved at the Sept. 24 Governing Board meeting: Cyril Azoulay, Network Services; Katie Butler, Fiscal Office; Lisa-Lea Plinski, Performing Arts; Julie Valenzuela, HPER.

Some New Points of Pride
GCC continues a tradition of excellence! The Gaucho football team beat the Air Force Academy JV team last week, 57 to 16. Significantly, this year's squad includes seven students with 4.0 GPAs and another 21 with GPAs of 3.0 or better. GCC's Traveler literary and fine arts magazine won a gold metal from the prestigious Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Traveler's overall design scored 325 of a possible 350 points; content got high marks as well. Also, Computers in Libraries cited GCC as the only community college and one of only seven colleges in the country to use video streaming for library instruction--another validation of our award-winning use of technology.

PAC Meetings Welcome All
The Presidents' Advisory Committee (PAC) will resume its monthly meetings Fri., Oct. 11, noon - 1:50 p.m., in the High Tech Center I Teleconference Room. This important group provides a forum for employee group representatives to discuss GCC issues and priorities. I anticipate some good dialog and a stimulating exchange of ideas. Meetings are open to all GCC employees. This year's PAC membership: Crafts - Harry Baker; Faculty - Carmela Arnoldt, Joseph Bednorz, Charlotte Cohen, Ray Esparza, Carnella Hardin, Joe Kersting, Nancy Siefer, John Winters; MAT - Mary Blackwell, Herman Gonzalez, Linda Hawbaker, Charles Jeffery, George Martinez, Debra Palok, Donna White; M&O - Richard Dodrill, Mario Quezada; PSA - Esmeralda Acosta, Carolyn Percifull. This year PAC will add adjunct faculty, whose representative is not yet confirmed. I extend my thanks to all for serving in this capacity.

United Way
It's that time of year when we can help others through a gift to the United Way. We kicked off the GCC campaign on Sept. 26 with an old-fashioned bake sale, featuring everything from brownies to bundt cake. Many other creative activities are planned to highlight United Way and the many community and social services it supports. Contribution forms have been distributed. A special emphasis this year is getting more students involved. Also, on Sat., Oct. 26 from 8:00 - 11:00 a.m., GCC employees are invited to volunteer at the West Side Food Bank. For more information about United Way activities, contact Co-Chairs Don Jensen-Bobadilla, 5-3485; or Jeanette Stewart, 5-3282.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Listening to the Neighbors
GCC is committed to being a good neighbor, literally. We acted on that commitment on Sept. 27 at an informal evening meeting with neighbors who live in the Mountain View/63rd Avenue area. They asked to meet with us to discuss concerns about traffic patterns near the northwest part of the campus. It was a good session for everyone involved, including our invited guests representing City of Glendale Traffic Engineering and Police Departments. They explained the role of the City in addressing these concerns. We will continue to meet with neighbors when asked as we balance their interests with access and safety for students.
