COLLEGE ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND RECOGNITIONS

New Employees

Please help me welcome the following new GCC employees approved at the Jan. 24 Governing Board meeting: Yvonne Duarte, Enrollment Services; Connie Gomez, Technology & Consumer Sciences; James Klemaszewski, Geology; Racquel Marshall, Nursing; Jennifer McCormick, Information Technology; Mitzi Monahan, Biology; Michael Patten, Applied Technology; James Sinner, Biology; and Julie Smith, Admissions and Records.

Congratulations to...

Dr. Carnella Hardin, a Business and Information Technology faculty member and Charlotte Cohen, a Library Media Center faculty member, who were recently notified of their selection as Excellence Awards recipients from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD). NISOD offers member colleges the opportunity to recognize individuals for outstanding contributions to teaching, leadership, and learning. Both Carnella and Charlotte plan to attend the annual NISOD conference in Austin, Texas, May 28-31 to receive their Excellence Awards medallions. Many thanks to Carnella and Charlotte for the difference they continue to make in the lives of students.

The 19-member GCC cheerleader squad, which was awarded first place in the American Grand Nationals, All-Girl College Division, held in Las Vegas. Coach Adrienne Whitlock has done a great job with this group.

Glendale Offers Pumper Truck for Fire Science Instruction

On Jan. 13, Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, Glendale Fire Department Chief Mark Burdick and other City officials, along with GCC fire science students, residential faculty, adjunct faculty and administrators gathered to celebrate the City's lease of a fire pumper truck to the GCC Fire Academy. This is the second fire truck GCC has acquired from a municipality. Many firefighters in training will benefit from this generosity. We are grateful to all those with the City and the College (Randy Kimmens, Doug DeSanti, Mike Osborn and Tom Lazzara) who made this arrangement possible.

African-American Month Events Planned for February

Several exciting events are planned for African-American Heritage Month in February. Africatamtam will perform traditional African drama through singing, dancing and drumming. The ever-popular Gospel Fest will be repeated, and a Black Cat Poetry Slam will be held. A panel of speakers from the community will discuss Beyond the Dream on Feb. 28. African beads will be displayed in the Student Union by Bead Museum personnel who will also hold a free workshop for participants to learn how to create their own bracelets. Dates, times and locations of these events can be found in the Calendar section of February's online Gaucho Gazette.

Bassmaster University Another Success

For the 26th year, GCC hosted dozens of fishing enthusiasts at Bassmaster University, held Jan. 14-15 on campus. More than 150 attendees from as far away as Anaheim, Calif. learned the latest tips and techniques for landing bass. Six top bass pros from around the U.S. taught the course. My thanks to Suzanne Smelser, Suzanne Higgins and Vi Burns for coordinating the details of this signature GCC outreach.
