GCC Football Team Wins National NJCAA Championship
CONGRATULATIONS to the GCC Gaucho football team, Head Coach Joe Kersting, Athletics Director Dave Grant and the entire coaching staff for the fantastic 50-48 victory over the Grand Rapids Community College Raiders in the Valley of the Sun National Football Bowl Game on Dec. 3. Dave Grant says the Gauchos are looking forward to being officially named NJCAA National Champions after the NJCAA voting on Tues., Dec. 6. This will be the third national championship for the Gauchos under the able leadership of Joe Kersting. We are proud of every student on the team and the coaches and staff for setting and continuously focusing on their goal and for making the commitment necessary to reach that goal.
President's Circle Brainstorming Yields Helpful Ideas
The two Fall semester meetings of the GCC President's Circle have yielded some great ideas for enhancing our outreach into the community. This group of 16 business and community leaders represents health care, small business, utilities, law, the news media, and other fields. Members' ideas for enhanced community outreach validated some of what we are already doing and challenge us to do more in other ways. For example, President's Circle members suggested new ways to network within community groups and how GCC can be of even greater service to the community in serving as a host site for high school ceremonies and additional community events.
Student-Centered Outreach Features Scholarships
This week's example of a student-centered activity at GCC focuses on the growing importance of scholarships. In her role as Coordinator of Development and Scholarship Relations, Frances Mateo delivers important information to students about scholarships. By instructor invitation, she visits classrooms to give short presentations on scholarships and how to apply for them. She also visits programs such as ACE-Plus and OPA (Office of Program Articulation), and student clubs to provide updates. Since August, she has made more than 25 classroom and program presentations, resulting in many new scholarship applications. To schedule Frances for a classroom visit, call 623-845-3147.
