GCC Hosts State Forum on the Future of Higher Education, Oct. 19
I urge everyone to attend an important public forum addressing the future of higher education in Arizona, sponsored by the Joint Legislative Ad Hoc Task Force on Higher Education Reform. This event is hosted by GCC on Wed., Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Lounge. It will feature the perspectives of panelists representing diverse GCC stakeholders: students; faculty; legislators; K-12, university, corporate and non-profit partners; and others. The event will center on issues of educational access and affordability. For more information, contact George Martinez at 5-3605.

United Way Offers Many Ways to Become Involved
A new "GCC-United Way Team" of 17 students, faculty and staff has been recruited to carry the message about United Way and help with various campaign activities. The GCC campaign began this week and will run through early November. Special events, daily "Blue Plate Specials" in the Palms Cafe, and group volunteering at the West Side Food Bank on Sat., Oct. 22 are all part of this year's effort. Please look for weekly updates via e-mail and other media from our GCC campaign co-chairs.

Parking Lot Changes on the Way
The clean-up of the orchard area in the northeast corner of campus is well underway, leading to construction of about 600 additional parking spaces. This project is part of the GCC Master Plan and is necessary as we anticipate north parking displaced by future construction activities. I am pleased with how we are responding to parking needs while preserving the orchard by replacing some trees and pruning others as needed. If you have questions about the northeast parking lot renovation, please refer to the October Administrative Services Newsletter.

GCC North and SU Renovation Featured at Master Planning Update, Oct. 10
You can hear about and comment on the latest information concerning expansion of GCC North and architectural designs for the Student Union at a special update session on Mon., Oct. 10, 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Student Union Lounge. An architect and project manager have been selected for the Student Union renovation. Educational specifications for GCC North's 76,000 square foot expansion are expected to go to the MCCCD Governing Board in October for approval. My thanks to everyone who participated in the master planning process. Special thanks to Dean of Institutional Planning, Chuck Jeffery, who facilitated the planning process, orchestrated the detailed educational specification reports, and kept the projects ahead of schedule.

CONGRATULATIONS...

...to GCC students Cheryl Barela and Filiz Dolar, selected to attend the Arizona Town Hall, which begins Oct. 30 at the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

...to the undefeated Gaucho football team, which won 22-17 against Scottsdale Community College on Oct. 1.
