A Positive Beginning to 2002-03
As of September 2, over 19,800 students have enrolled at GCC. Many thanks to the College Safety staff and so many others who helped make our opening week a success. Extra parking options made a big difference, as did the high visibility of College Safety personnel through extra bike patrols and careful monitoring of traffic. Parking appears to be adequate, and Safety Director Debra Palok reports that the southeast temporary parking area will be closed next week as we settle into more routine traffic patterns.

Budget Planning on the Front Burner
Our collective attention to the 2003-04 budget development process will be a high priority throughout September. Budget submissions will be due Monday, September 30, at 8:00 a.m. (The online budget request system will be available through Sunday evening.) In a few days, I will be releasing to the campus community a message that outlines the District's budget planning assumptions and my perspectives about GCC's funding priorities. Please look for this communication via e-mail.

September 11 at GCC
Student leaders, in conjunction with Student Life, have planned a series of events and activities to remember the September 11 tragedies. The campus community is invited to gather at the flagpole just north of the Disabled Student Resource Building (TDS Building) to participate in a moment of silence at 8:50 a.m. on Wed., September 11. That same day from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m., campus spiritual clubs will unite for "9/11 Spiritual Healing and Reconciliation" in the Student Lounge. For evening students, a memorial video produced by our Media Department will be shown outdoors on a large screen from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Also on September 11, the Maricopa District will host a free commemorative performance, "Songs of Sanctuary," at 8:00 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater, 203 W. Adams in downtown Phoenix. Early arrival is recommended for this multi-media presentation, which includes the GCC group, "Physical Graffiti." NCA Final Report Available
As previously reported, the Higher Learning Commission/NCA has issued its final report confirming GCC's re-accreditation through 2011-12, and outlining a series of challenges we must address. Copies of the report are now available for your review at the west-side checkout counter in the Library. In a few days, the report will be online and can be accessed via the College's Website.

New Outreach to Adjunct Faculty
The premiere issue of the Adjunct Gazette newsletter has been delivered to approximately 700 adjunct faculty at GCC. This new quarterly publication from the Community/Public Relations Department is one of several steps we're taking to enhance communications with our adjunct faculty colleagues. The Adjunct Gazette will be available online as well.

Steve Helfgot Visit
On August 28, Dr. Steven Helfgot, the new Vice Chancellor for Student Development and Community Affairs visited GCC. At an informal reception hosted by the college, Faculty and Student Services professionals were able to meet Dr. Helfgot and share perspectives on student development. Dr. Helfgot's leadership in this field is a matter of record, and we look forward to working with him.
