COLLEGE ACTIVITIES, EVENTS, AND RECOGNITIONS

Moving Day (Part Two)
In the last newsletter I congratulated several departments for a first-rate team effort in relocating into our new Enrollment Center. I also need to acknowledge the important role GCC's Procurement Department performed in purchasing and overseeing the installation of the furniture and fixtures that went into this new building. Many thanks to Debra Walmer, Renee Johnson, and staff for their support!

Storm Clean-Up Kudos
Many of us were out in the yard at home cleaning up after the big storm on July 14. Likewise, the campus was hit hard and needed a great deal of clean up during the week of July 15. A number of trees were damaged and lots of debris needed to be raked and hauled. I can speak for many in saying that I was impressed with the quick response from Facilities Manager, Al Gonzales, and his crew in Maintenance & Operations. Within just a few days, they took care of all the problem areas and made us sparkle once again. Thank you for this extra effort in making GCC look good.

Title Change for Dean Sanchez
Alberto Sanchez, GCC's Dean of Educational Services, has a new job title. Dean Sanchez is now "Dean of Student and Community Services." The title was reviewed by GCC's expanded administrative group and Faculty leadership. The new title provides a better description of his current responsibilities; emphasizes the importance of student services; and provides a better alignment with similar positions at other colleges.

Get to Know a New Colleague
As announced in a recent newsletter, on July 15 George Martinez joined GCC as our new Director of Community and Public Relations, charged with bringing a strategic focus to our communications/outreach program. He supervises internal communications, media and government relations, marketing, advertising, publications, and other related areas. We have a great opportunity to capitalize on George's background and expertise, so I encourage all of you to become part of his "learning curve" and help him connect with the GCC community. Please feel free to share important and/or newsworthy information with him, and consider inviting him to your next college meeting or community event. George is now on e-mail and can be reached at 5-3605.

Are You Connected in the Community?
Just a reminder - if you are you involved with a civic/community organization, please drop me a note, copied to George Martinez in Community/Public Relations, and let us know about it. We would like to get a better feel for how extensively the GCC family is involved in making the communities we serve better places to live.
