New Pilot Project to Share Data with School Districts Those of you who attended the Governing Board Listening Session at GCC on Feb. 20 may recall an eloquent presentation from Glendale Elementary School District (GESD) Superintendent Perry Hill in which he requested a closer working relationship with us. I am pleased to report that a direct result of that meeting and Dr. Hill's cordial challenge have led to a new pilot project that will benefit GCC, GESD, and the Glendale Union High School District (GUSD). Last week I met with Dr. Hill, GUSD Superintendent Vernon Jacobs, and Institutional Effectiveness Director Linda Hawbaker to see how we could share data more strategically. We collect a great deal of data about students, much of which could be of great value to our K-12 counterparts. We discussed trends in student demographics, diversity and mobility, and agreed to take some initial steps, on a pilot basis, that focus on reciprocal data-sharing. I'll update you in the fall about our progress.
Facilities Master Planning Moves Ahead
Much activity has occurred in the past few weeks to refine GCC facilities master planning. As reported in a previous newsletter, I presented a comprehensive overview of our master planning to the Governing Board in late April. An important step following that was a retreat June 4-5 with the GCC Administrative Group and selected staff and faculty leaders to define new construction and renovation needs that support instructional programs through 2014. Lionel Diaz, Arlen Solochek and John Sazama of District Facilities Development joined us for the retreat. We reviewed the master plan; capital funding limits; program enrollment and budget data; and the age and condition of our facilities, among other factors.
We are now developing a draft list of construction and renovation projects due to the District by July 31. This list takes planning to a higher level of specifics, and includes the type of renovations; number and size of new classrooms, labs and offices; technology support and special equipment needs for programs. It also will include our best estimate of funds needed for each project. As part of the fall Convocation program, I will present a master planning status report and discuss it with many of you. We will seek broad input, modify and prioritize projects as needed, and submit a final version to District by Sept. 26.
As planning progresses, I have asked Senior Associate Dean of Instruction Chuck Jeffery to send periodic master planning updates to the college community. For those interested, Chuck can provide minutes of the June retreat and provide project scope and cost estimates.
Summer Power Conservation
Arizona Public Service (APS) and Salt River Project (SRP) have asked large organizations that use a lot of electricity in the summer to conserve when possible. The Maricopa District is of course among the major power consumers year-round, and each college is committed to conserving energy. Doing so takes a collective effort involving all GCC employees. Here are some reminders for all of us:
-
Turn off lights when rooms are empty/when leaving
-
Set room temperatures up by two degrees
-
Unplug appliances not used during the summer, such as those in vacant offices
-
Turn off computers and printers when not in use
-
Utilize natural light whenever possible, to the exclusion of lights
Taking these and other steps do make a difference in our utility bills, and demonstrate to the public that GCC is a good steward of our resources. Thanks.
GCC Transfer Students Succeed at ASU West
More than half of all ASU West Fall 2002 graduates transferred from Glendale Community College. That is an amazing statistic. A recent letter from ASU West Provost Elaine Maimon stated that of the 636 graduates who earned bachelor's degrees and certificates, 342 transferred from GCC. Of those 342, approximately 98 graduated with honors. Students earned ASU degrees ranging from global business and education to life sciences and english. We are proud of our continuing partnership with ASU West and the University-College Center (UCC) that has made these successes possible.
Emeritus Faculty
As reported in a previous newsletter, we are eager to send Faculty Emeritus certificates to former faculty members and family members of deceased faculty. To that end, we would appreciate any help in identifying family members of Frank Bietto, Dorothy Clayton, C. Eugene Harris, and Ethel Martin. We are also needing contact information for former dean Jean Staten. These special certificates acknowledge emeritus distinction, in some cases posthumously. If you have any information about these former faculty, or know how we might reach their family members, please contact Roxie Helbert in my office at 5-3012. Thanks.
