COLLEGE ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND RECOGNITIONS

New Employees
Please welcome the following new GCC employees, approved by the Maricopa Governing Board at the Oct. 22 meeting: Michael L. Bell, Athletics; Susan Campbell, CAD; Charles Hulihan, Performing Arts; Tara La Casta-Revell, Advisement; Angela Mick, Biology; Betty M. Moller, Business; Thomas Sutherland, Athletics.

Safety Issues in the Spotlight
Auto break-ins and attempted break-ins have commanded more attention recently. An incident last week in the northeast parking lot resulted in the arrest of three individuals and underscored the excellent working relationship between GCC Campus Safety and the Glendale Police Department. I met with Campus Safety Director Debra Palok last week to explore additional steps that can be taken to help prevent crime and enhance the visibility of safety personnel throughout the campus. Debra has some excellent ideas about a "Partners in Prevention" program, along with adding more surveillance cameras, and other action to deter crime more aggressively. To address traffic safety, a new sign has been posted near the 63rd Avenue exit reminding motorists leaving campus to drive responsibly and respect our neighbors' concerns about speed.

Alumni Event Planned Nov. 7
To "round up" alumni in support of GCC during Homecoming Week, the Alumni Executive Council has scheduled a special western-themed reception, Thurs., Nov. 7, at 7:00 p.m., in the outdoor patio between the Enrollment Center and the Student Union Building. Alumni are invited to get their first-ever alumni ID card, enjoy some cowboy grub, and mingle with former classmates. Also, Nanci Burk has helped coordinate a Homecoming week (Nov. 4-9) activity that encourages everyone to dress in a certain theme or wear Gaucho colors. Look for the details on fliers around campus.

Gaucho Football a Source of Pride
We can all take great pride in another winning season for the Gaucho Football team. If you see Head Football Coach Joe Kersting on campus, please take a moment to thank him for his good work. Last Saturday, the Gauchos overpowered Arizona Western 21-18, bringing the season record to 7-1. This week we play Eastern Arizona, and our final game will be with Dixie College on November 9. On Friday, Nov. 1, the first GCC Men's Basketball game of the season tips off at 6:00 p.m., at home. On Dec. 7, GCC will host the Valley of the Sun Bowl, sponsored by the Maricopa District.

United Way Update
United Way activities continue around campus and throughout the District, leading up to the Oct. 31, 5:00 p.m. deadline for employee donations. As of Oct. 25, $16,334 had been raised in employee donations--about 65 percent of our $25,000 goal. As noted in Dr. Fred Gaskin's District-wide e-mail on Friday, United Way does a lot of good for many of our students and their families; every gift counts. While I recognize that people have very different choices and preferences for charitable giving, United Way presents an alternative that spans the spectrum of human needs. Also, many thanks to those of you who participated in "Make a Difference" Day by volunteering at the Westside Food bank on Oct. 26. For more information on United Way, contact Don Jensen-Bobadilla or Jeanette Stewart.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Meetings with ASU Partners
Several Maricopa College presidents met recently with ASU President Michael Crow and members of his staff to reaffirm our transfer programs and discuss other programs and issues of mutual interest. Following up to that discussion, I met with ASU West Provost Elaine Maimon about the University-College Center (UCC) and how we can work together more closely, particularly to enhance UCC enrollment. A new brochure promoting the UCC, produced by GCC, should help with this effort.
