Dr. Douglas Nottingham has been active throughout the U.S. as a percussionist, multi-media performance artist, composer, music educator, recording artist and producer. As a performer, he is experienced in many diverse genres, running the gamut ranging from symphony orchestras to world-beat jazz groups, contemporary chamber music ensembles to drums corps and original heavy metal bands to ethnomusicological ensembles. As a music educator he has enjoyed teaching all grades from elementary school to college graduate level. As a solo percussionist and as a member of the New Mexico-based Links Ensemble and Phoenix's Crossing 32nd Street, he has specialized in the performance of modern and postmodern chamber works. This pursuit has led to rewarding projects with significant composers as well as interdisciplinary collaborations. He has commissioned and premiered many new works and has performed on music and dance series and symposia throughout North America. Additionally, he has performed as featured soloist at the conventions of Percussive Arts Society (PASIC), the Society of Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS), The Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival (FEMF), and the Society of Composers (SCI).
In the field of popular music, Doug has played with the band Skumbaag for 20 years. As multi-instrumentalist performing on percussion, MIDI percussion, spoken word, Theremin and live/sequenced electronics, he uses this group as a creative outlet and as an opportunity to develop his recording studio techniques as performer and producer. The band has been engaged to perform with symphony orchestras and on regional popular and contemporary music festivals as well as touring throughout the United States. Additionally, he actively performs and tours with the Vespus Marimba Band and the multimedia electronica group pincushioned.
Dr. Nottingham holds degrees from Arizona State University, The University of New Mexico, and Limestone College. At GCC he teaches percussion, electronic music, digital audio, music business, and dance music courses. He founded and directs the GCC Percussion Ensemble.
