Law Enforcement Operations

Expand your police officer skills or prepare for the next step in your law enforcement career. Law Enforcement Operations courses include advanced officer training in firearms and weapons, negotiation techniques, high-risk stops and criminal investigation.

These classes are open to active Arizona Law Enforcement Personnel and qualify for AZPOST proficiency training credits. Registration requires proof of eligibility.

  • Criminal Investigations Certification (CCL) prepares law enforcement officers to specialize in the investigation of criminal activity and to successfully assist in prosecution.

  • Law Enforcement Recertification for Concealed Weapons course for retired law enforcement officers wishing to fulfill the requirement of federal law HR218 Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA). 
    • After you pass three judgmental shooting scenarios you may submit your LEOSA permit application to DPS.

Advanced Officer Training

(AZPOST certifications where applicable)

Advanced Officer Training courses allow officers to develop their career paths while furthering their education. The classes offered have been approved for AZPOST continuing or proficiency training credits and carry AZPOST certifications where applicable.

Classes include:

  • AZPOST Law Enforcement (General) Instructor
  • AZPOST Firearms Instructor
  • AZPOST Rifle Instructor
  • AZPOST High-Risk Stop Instructor
  • Criminal Investigation Certification (aka: Detective School)
  • Tactical handgun, shotgun and rifle courses

LET classes are open to law enforcement, military and AZ DOC personnel only.

Law Enforcement (General) Instructor

This class certifies an officer to be an AzPOST General Instructor. The purpose of the course is to provide participants with the basic skills and knowledge necessary to describe factors affecting adult learners; demonstrate an understanding of training liability issues; create effective performance objectives; describe appropriate presentation techniques; demonstrate proficiency in lesson plan format and development; identify applicable evaluation instruments; and successfully demonstrate instructional ability through four separate timed, oral presentations. Successful completion of this program will qualify participants to be eligible for other AzPOST instructor programs, e.g., Firearms Instructor, Rifle Instructor, High Risk Stops Instructor, etc.

Format: The class will be taught in-person on two consecutive Saturdays and Sundays, 10 hours per day, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Costs: 3 credit hours plus $15 lab fee. There is also a $15 registration fee if you are not currently enrolled at GCC.

Prerequisites:

  • Must be an Arizona certified peace officer.
  • Must have two years of certified peace officer experience.
  • Certified status begins on graduation date, not hire date.

Note: Students are encouraged to bring a laptop, thumb drive, props/visual aids for use in presentations on non-law enforcement related topics of their choice.

AzPOST Rifle Instructor Certification LET256AA

40-hour course certifying students as an AzPOST law enforcement rifle firearms instructor. Attendees also receive AzPOST credit for 40 hours of continuing or proficiency training. To be recognized by AzPOST as an AzPOST Rifle Instructor, you must ALREADY be an AzPOST General Instructor and Firearms Instructor prior to taking this class.

Class format: One contiguous week, Thursday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. except there will be one night shoot, usually on Friday.

Costs: 3 credit hours plus $50 lab fee. There is also a $15 registration fee if you are not currently enrolled at GCC.

Class Location: Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Range, 26900 W. Buckeye Hills Drive, Buckeye, AZ. Directions: West on I-10, exit 112, head south on US-85 towards Gila Bend. Look for MP144 and turn right on Buckeye Hills Drive. You should see a large tractor-trailer with an MCSO hiring banner. Continue past the Joe Foss range for approximately 1 mile to the MCSO range.

Class Requirements:

  • Must be a certified peace officer or sent by an agency (I.D. will be checked on first day of class)
  • Duty type semi-auto pistol with three magazines and duty gear
  • Semi-auto rifle/carbine equipped with iron sights or holo/optic sights and 4 magazines and magazine pouches
  • 2,000 rounds of ammunition for the semiautomatic rifle
  • 200 rounds for the duty sidearm
  • Eye protection
  • Ear Protection
  • Hat with a brim
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Flashlight for low light shooting
  • Firearm cleaning equipment
  • Shooting mat

AzPOST Firearm Instructor LET256

An 80-hour course certifying students as an AzPOST law enforcement firearms instructor, and making them eligible to become an Arizona concealed weapons permit instructor. Attendees also get AzPOST credit for 80 hours of continuing or proficiency training. To be recognized by AzPOST as an AzPOST Firearms Instructor, you must ALREADY be an AzPOST General Instructor prior to taking this class.

Class format: Two contiguous weeks, Thursday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. except there will be two night shoots, usually on the second Thursday and Friday.

Costs: 5 credit hours plus $50 book fee. There is also a $15 registration fee if you are not currently enrolled at GCC.

Location: MCSO Range is located at 26900 W. Buckeye Hills Drive, Buckeye. Directions: West on I-10, Exit 112, head south on US-85 towards Gila Bend.   • Must be a certified peace officer or sent by an agency. (I.D. will be checked on first day of class.).
  • Must fire a score of 230 out of 250 on the AzPOST Daytime Qualification course the first day of class with a duty handgun. Maximum of two attempts to qualify.
  • Duty semi-auto pistol with minimum of three magazines and duty gear.
  • 1,500 rounds of quality semi-auto handgun ammunition
  • Flashlight for night shooting.
  • Eye and ear protection.
  • Hat with brim.
  • Suggested equipment includes: knee guards, cleaning equipment for all weapons, casual clothing, drinks and snacks, sunblock.

Successful completion of the course is dependent upon the student:

  • Attain a minimum score of 80% on all written tests on first attempt.
  • Attain a minimum score of 230 on the AzPOST dim-light course of fire. Maximum of two attempts to qualify.
  • Perform first a Phase one and then a Phase two malfunction clearance drill all within 8 seconds.
  • Develop a lesson plan for a practical training drill, complete with a minimum of two performance objectives.
  • Conduct, with other students, a practical handgun training drill for the rest of the class.
  • Full participation in all aspects of the class.

The Arizona DPS Concealed Weapons Permit section has been given the authority to issue credentials attesting that an officer has met the requirements of the federal LEOSA. Jerry McCown will continue to offer this service to retired officers. You will no longer need to register through GCC; therefore, please contact Jerry directly at jerry673@gmail.com to let him know what date you need for qualification. Please include your contact information in your email.

Practice prior to coming to the range if you have not fired recently.

Qualification Requirements

Bring your own firearm (the TYPE of firearm you intend to carry), gear and ammo.

You will meet the instructor at the west gate no later than 10 minutes prior to the shoot time.
(Pull into the parking lot and proceed along the drive that leads to the facility gate.)
Students are covered by the college liability insurance and the use of the range.

You Passed, now what?

Mr. McCown will supply the application form properly signed by him indicating that you passed the qualification process. You will then need to send the application, DPS required fees ($20), and the agency letter required by DPS to the Department of Public Safety. Arizona Department of Public Safety website.

Criminal Investigations Certificate Program LET225AA through AG

Also known as "The Detective School" by some agencies. These are the courses required by some valley agencies for officers to test for Investigations. This certificate program has an AzPOST compliance confirmation number for 96 hours of AzPOST continuing training hours.

This certificate is 6 credits for a total cost of approximately $531. Students may enroll in all seven courses and pay the entire amount or, if preferred, students may enroll and pay tuition for each section at the time they enroll. (intervals of 3 weeks).

A college "certificate of completion program" is a special classification which denotes a specifically designed group of classes to allow the participant to attain a CERTIFICATE attesting to their completed studies.

Students are required to become a member of CT2Learn and can choose their own option for membership that range from approximately $29.99 per month to $249.99 for 365 days. The directions for becoming a CT2Learn member are included within the instructions for the first course.

The Investigations Certificate Program consists of 7 classes. Students must complete the first six courses before taking Criminal Investigations Certification VII (LET225AG). Following completion of all sections, the officer will receive a Certificate showing their completion of the program and an AzPOST Program Compliance Form (PA-4) showing their continuing training hours.
