Nursing Grad Wins “Rising Star” Award at Nurse of the Year Gala Event
GCC graduate Amanda Dunn received the “Rising Star” award at the March of Dimes “Nurse of the Year” gala awards event on Saturday, August 23 at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort in Scottsdale. The event, the eleventh annual, celebrates nursing excellence by recognizing nursing leaders from across Arizona. Patients, families and colleagues nominated nurses throughout the state for the awards.
Dunn works as a registered nurse (RN) in the neonatal intensive care unit at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. She attended the GCC/NAU concurrent enrollment program, earning an associate’s degree from GCC and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northern Arizona University in the same semester. She graduated in 2013.
“I am honored and extremely flattered to have won the award,” said Dunn. “I had some amazing professors and clinical instructors while at GCC and am incredibly thankful for all they taught me."
Dunn’s husband, Matthew Dunn, a pediatric nurse, attended GCC in the Banner fellows program in 2008-2009.
The event began as a means of heightening awareness and interest in the range of rewarding careers available to registered nurses. Sponsors include United Health Group’s Center for Nursing Advancement, Cigna and Humana.
