Heavenly Views at North
"Night Skies at GCC North" Event Offers Heavenly Views
North Campus Observatory Hosts SciTech Festival Event, Friday, March 7
Come experience one of astronomy’s most precious resources: a dark night sky.
The eight telescopes at the GCC North campus will be open for public viewing on Friday, March 7 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Students, employees, extended families and community members are invited to this year’s activities.
Telescopes will be trained on major features of the night sky, including Jupiter, Orion, Pleiades and the moon. Impromptu primers on constellations will be available from astronomy students and alums who will serve as ambassadors.
The event offers an opportunity for parents to help expand their children’s worlds by viewing the sky through state-of-the-art technology. Displays, demonstrations and activities in an adjacent classroom will add to the fun. Children and adults alike can experience the fun of creating small comets by mixing the raw ingredients under the supervision of an experienced astronomy professor.
Light refreshments will be served. Visitors are asked to dress warmly and to wear flat, comfortable shoes, as the viewing area will be dark and the weather possibly cool. The semi-circular telescope pad is located at the southwest corner of the parking lot, west of the D building on the GCC North campus, 5727 W. Happy Valley Road, Phoenix, AZ 85310.
The event is one of the official 2014 SciTech Festival events.
