DaimlerChrysler Donates $10,000 to GCC Automotive Program
Following a similar $10,000 grant in 2004, the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund has again approved a $10,000 grant for its College Apprentice Program (CAP) at Glendale Community College (GCC). CAP trains factory-certified technicians at community colleges. The additional funds will purchase shop equipment, computers, and storage systems for specialty tools and supplies; develop curriculum and lesson plans; and conduct career day recruiting fairs.
Students in the popular CAP program are sponsored by local valley dealership and alternate paid internship weeks with classroom academic weeks spent at GCC. The college assists interested students in finding a dealer-sponsor if necessary. Students can earn a one-year certificate in Automotives or a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS).
Student interns usually become full-time service employees at the dealerships where they interned upon successful completion of the program. Income potential is approximately $40,000 within two years of graduation, on average. Some experienced technicians earn more than $100,000 a year. Local service managers enthusiastically support the CAP program and have high praise for GCC automotive students.
