MCCCD's ACE Program Receives Grants and Honors; GCC Group Boasts 500+ Students
More than 500 at-risk high school students who might never have gone to college are taking free classes through the ACE-Plus program at Glendale Community College. ACE, which stands for "Achieving a College Education," is a district-wide program of the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD); it is called ACE-Plus at the Glendale campus due to additional programs and services offered at GCC. In 1988, MCCCD launched the ACE program—a partnership between community colleges and local high schools that was designed to reduce dropouts among "at risk" high school students and transition them to community college and university studies. Participants are mentored by college officials while still in high school and take free college classes evenings and weekends. Students who participate in the ACE program during their high school years are more likely to continue with college. ACE targets minority students, financially disadvantaged students, students whose parents never went to college, and other at-risk groups.
The ACE program has recently received a great deal of national recognition. Excelencia in Education selected the MCCCD ACE program from forty-two other community college programs across the country as an "example of excellence" and awarded $5,000 for ACE scholarships. The Lumina Foundation for Education announced a $374,750 five-year grant for research to provide valuable statistical information on ACE students' successes through high school and college. A $1 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Energy has been approved to support ACE programs over three years. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indians have awarded the ACE program $200,00 for scholarships, and the Hispanic Women's Conference (HWC) funds a scholarship partnership for scholarships for ACE Latina students. Erika Monarrez of GCC was selected for an HWC scholarship. For more information on the ACE-Plus program at GCC, call Program Director Dr. Ibrahim Naim at 623.845.3089.
