"Flowers for Algernon" Plays at GCC, Starting Nov. 10
"Flowers for Algernon," an award-winning, science-fiction novel that inspired a play and a movie, will be performed six times by Glendale Community College students during November: Nov. 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18, at 7:30 p.m. and Sun., Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. This is the story of Charlie Gordon, a mentally retarded man who volunteers for a medical experiment involving intelligence-enhancing treatments given to him and a lab mouse named Algernon. Before a poignant ending, both Charlie and Algernon develop super-intelligence. The story originally won the Hugo Award for Best Short Fiction and the Nebula Award for Best Novel, awarded by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. In 1968, it inspired the movie "Charly," which won Cliff Robertson the Best Actor Oscar for the title role.
