New GCC Online Class Teaches Students How to Fit Physical Exercise into Individual Lifestyles
Glendale Community College has designed an innovative new class to teach busy people how to fit exercise creatively into their hectic lives. The Active Living Every Day (ALED) program is like no other exercise class. In fact, students won't exercise at all in Active Living classes. Instead, they'll learn ways to be active every day: at work, at home, on vacation, etc. ALED works because students learn the practical skills to become and stay physically active, such as: overcoming barriers to physical activity, setting realistic goals, building confidence, managing time, and staying motivated. This class is conducted primarily online and meets on the GCC campus only once a month for instructor contact. Class meets online at www.ActiveLiving.info and from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on the first Friday of each month in room T1-127 on the GCC campus, 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. Class begins Aug. 19 and costs $125. For information or to register, contact Louise Keogh at
louise.keogh@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623.845.3883.
Free Online Job Hunting Assistance Expands at GCC
On Aug. 1, a powerful online job search tool from Jobing.com joined other career resources at Glendale Community College. Jobing.com, a leading national provider of locally-focused job search and recruiting services designed to connect local employers with job seekers, has developed Maricopa "Career Network" web sites for GCC and the other Maricopa Community Colleges. The sites include an integrated job board powered by Jobing.com technology, which can be accessed at www.maricopa.edu/careers. This free, comprehensive, online career resource enables anyone to post résumés and search for their next Arizona job across more than 40 job categories. Employers can post jobs on the Career Network free of charge. Each site includes valuable career resources, including local and campus career news, and a calendar of career events and job fairs. Contact GCC Career Services at 623.845.3283 or www.gc.maricopa.edu/career for more information about other services offered, such as career counseling, résumé assistance, interviewing tactics, career search classes, internship information and more. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale.
Dorrance Family Selects 10 More GCC Students for Scholarships
Once again, Jacquie and Bennett Dorrance, benefactors of the Dorrance Scholarships, have dramatically changed the lives of ten Glendale Community College students. The 2006-2007 GCC Dorrance scholarship recipients are: Anna Dominguez, Alfonso Gutierrez III, Jennifer Gutierrez, Mary Kim McFarlane, Kimberly Mulvin, Jennifer Nagle, Roxanne Parrish, Elisabeth Renteria, Josefina Salcido, and Odessa Shoulders. Through the Arizona Community Foundation, in partnership with the Dorrance Family Foundation, $30,000 is awarded annually to GCC students. Applicants must be single parents, sole providers for their families, and participants in the GCC Mentoring Program. This four-year partnership has resulted in the success of many GCC students. The Dorrances also sponsor the prestigious $8,000 Dorrance Transfer Scholarship, which assists students who successfully complete community college and transfer to ASU. Two GCC students have also received this scholarship.
