GCC Tech Camp Shows High-Tech World to High School Juniors and Seniors, Aug. 1-3
A select group of high school students will learn about the fascinating world of hands-on technology, from basic computing, CAD, and CISCO networking to electronics and robotics, when Glendale Community College hosts its 8th annual "Tech Camp," Aug. 1-3. The news media are invited to meet the students as they build robots and more. Eligible students are those who will be juniors or seniors in high school this fall. GCC, the National Science Foundation, and Western Maricopa Tech Prep Consortium partnered to offer this immersion-learning experience. Lab exercises and classroom projects will provide students many opportunities for interaction with GCC faculty. Field trips to technology companies will provide contact with industry leaders and give insight into various tech fields and career opportunities. Students will receive 1.5 college credits for completing the program. This opportunity is free--including breakfast and lunch each day--for the selected applicants. Students will find a complete agenda of activities and an on-line application at www.gc.maricopa.edu/techcamp. Interested persons may also contact Tech Camp Director Manny Griego at
manny.griego@gcmail.maricopa.edu or 623.845.3520 for more information.
Four West Valley Students Receive Scholarships from USA Funds
Four students, who might not have been able to attend college otherwise, have each received $1,500 scholarships from USA Funds to attend Glendale Community College. Marisa Daengpiea of El Mirage; and Raymond Gessele, Jacquanette Slowtalker, and MeJenta Spencer-Gualdoni, all of Glendale, are recipients of USA Funds Arizona Silver Anniversary Scholarships and will attend GCC this fall. To qualify for the scholarships, students must come from households with annual incomes of $35,000 or less. USA Funds, the nation's leading education-loan guarantor, awards approximately $8 million in scholarships annually to help low-to-moderate-income students nationwide pursue higher education. For information about the many other scholarship opportunities at GCC, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/scholarships or contact Frances Mateo at 623.845.3147 or

GCC Professor Attends Prague Seminar
As part of Glendale Community College's commitment to International Education, GCC English Professor Ruth Callahan of Sun City has left for Prague, the Czech Republic, to attend a seminar hosted by the Maricopa Community Colleges. Callahan will participate in lectures and discussions in the Prague Seminar Program, a two-week pilot program July 15-31. GCC's International Education Committee selected her to be one of ten faculty members—one from each of the ten Maricopa colleges—participating in the program. With Prague College serving as the host institution, the program will enrich participants' understanding of a society and region undergoing massive changes from a Soviet-era economy to a free-market model. History, politics, economics, society and culture will be explored as well as the role of the Czech Republic within the European Union. Attendees will develop curriculum modules based on their participation.
